The Economics of Energy

Biography

Mr. James Sterling (BS Physics,University of Houston; MBA Finance, Columbia University) has a long history in the energy business. Starting at the age of 16, Mr. Sterling traveled with his grandfather through oil fields in the Southwestern United States. After military service (Jump School, OCS, Ranger School), he joined the family oil and gas business.

Mr. Sterling was CEO of a number of energy companies including PrimeEnergy Corporation (PRNG), in which he helped lay the foundation for an impressive stock price appreciation after taking the company public. As CEO of PrimeEnergy, he managed the Sterling Asset and Income Funds, rated as the highest paying funds of their kind for a period of 3 years by Stanger & Associates. Mr. Sterling also managed over 60 public and private partnerships and unit trusts with approximately 9,000 investors with an unblemished regulatory record. He put together a syndicate of investment banks and engaged major brokerage firms to underwrite a series of private and public offerings.

In regard to E&P companies, his experience as a CEO and his contacts in the “oil patch” have enabled him to go beyond published financial information and other readily available metrics. In addition to exploration and production, he has been a student of, and advised on, other subsectors in the energy field including refining, coal, and various types of alternative energy.

In the case of certain companies, Mr. Sterling will offer to introduce the CEO’s and other officers to a wide range of top-level contacts in Europe, which he has developed over a period of many years.
